What are you listening to?  When it comes to sleep, and music, here's what we've got!

For sleep?  Something calming.  Soothing.  Slow tempo.  Lower that heart rate and relax the mind.

  1. Ambient music.  Check out artists like Brian Eno, Moby, and William Basinski for something instrumental.
  2. Nature sounds.  Rainfall, ocean waves, forest sounds, win.  Natural sounds are, ahem, naturally relaxing.
  3. Classical music.  Bach, Claude Debussy, Erik Satie can give you something calm and structured to help wind down.  Check out Debussy’s Clair de Lune or Satie’s Gymnopédies.
  4. Binaural beats.  Binaural beats play two slightly different frequencies in each ear, and the brain perceives a third tone that helps synchronize brain waves. Certain frequencies (like Delta and Theta waves) are associated with deep sleep and relaxation.
  5. Chillout/Lo-Fi Beats. Chillout or lo-fi beats are often instrumental and have soft, steady rhythms that can create a mellow vibe, ideal for falling asleep. The lack of lyrics prevents your mind from becoming too active.
  6. Soundscapes or meditation music. Designed specifically for relaxation, these soundtracks often include deep tones, chimes, and harmonic melodies that promote peace and tranquility.

Do you have any preferred genres for winding down, or do you usually use music to fall asleep?
